I found my tribe at the Florida Flambeau.
Flambeau means flame in French.
I loved everything about newspapers—especially the Flambeau. I loved the smell of the press room, I loved hanging out with my gritty journalist pals, and I loved the purposeful nature of bringing news and fresh ideas to readers with the hope of inspiring them to make the world a better place.
Eventually, I decided I needed to reach a younger audience, so I did the only thing that made sense to me at the time: I went to graduate school, wrote my master’s thesis on equity and equality in education, and became an elementary school teacher.
While teaching, I bucked against the SOL, developed an inclusive history curriculum, and led the charge advocating for equitable school funding as president of the local education association.
I eventually married my education and publishing careers, working at two University of Virginia spin-off companies designing teacher education programs. This led to my work in communications and marketing, which, in turn, led to my content strategy work with UVA’s Advancement Communications team.
I’m excited about what’s next.
